Isola Aperta

ORTIGIA, SICILY
SITE DESIGN.

Overview

For two months in the Summer of 2022, a group of University of Minnesota design students worked together to recreate an identity for an ex-convent located in the heart of Ortigia, Sicily. The program's first phase focused on research and understanding what the ex-convent is capable of housing. The second phase considers the site as a cultural learning center for various exhibitions and studies. Throughout the project, it was crucial for us as designers to think interculturally, understanding design as a social science and what it means to design for the people of Sicilian culture.
